What is Hair Breakage & Signs of Breakage

Hair breaks when strands split and start going in different directions or split and break off, completely. This splitting of strands can also create dry, frizzy hair that does not look smooth.

What Causes Hair Breakage?

There are many causes of hair breakage, including:

  • Dry hair
  • Heat damage
  • Over use of treatments: many popular hair treatments like keratin and perms can make your hair feel healthier when first used, but over use can actually break your hair cuticle and cause damage and hair breakage
  • Washing your hair too often: this can strip your hair of its natural oils and sebum, leaving your hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.
  • Not drying hair properly: rubbing your hair between a terrycloth towel is essentially like taking pieces of straw and rubbing them together until it breaks or becomes very fine. This is especially harmful because your hair is extra vulnerable when it’s wet, making it more prone to breakage and hair loss.
  • Split ends from lack of hair trims

How to Stop Hair Breakage – Proven Tips

1. Moisture & Hydration is Everything

The biggest way to fix and prevent hair breakage and loss is by making sure your hair is moisturized and nourished.

The reason hair breakage occurs is because your hair strands split due to heat damage, dryness, and other factors that suck the moisture out of your hair so the best way to stop hair breakage is by adding back in all the moisture through conditioners and deeply nourishing hair masks.

If you suffer from severe hair breakage and thinning, giving your hair extra moisture and hydration is the number one way to make sure it regains the necessary strength for your hair to not be so weak and brittle, causing hair breakage and loss.

So if you’re wondering how to fix hair breakage naturally at home, then look for moisture rich products that pack in the hydration like masks, conditioners for breakage, hair moisturizers, and hydrating serums.

Here are a few of my favorite moisture rich hair breakage products:

2. Never Skip Hair Protectant

If you want to know how to stop hair breakage, then one of the best thing you can do is to stop using as much heat. Using too much heat on your hair can leave it over processed, dry, brittle, damaged, and with lots of split ends that leads to breakage and hair loss.

But I know not using heat isn’t realistic for everyone, so if you do use heat, then always start off with a heat protectant that will create a layer of protection on your hair.

These two heat protectants are popular favorites:

3. Use a Microfiber Towel

Start incorporating this tip in your hair wash routine and you will see miracles in terms of how little your hair falls and breaks.

One of the worst parts of your hair care routine that is contributing significantly to your hair breakage is using a terrycloth towel to dry your hair by rubbing your hair between the towel. This creates friction in the hair and leads to a lot of breakage, dry hair, and frizziness.

Instead, use a gentle fabric towel (the rougher the towel fabric, the more damage it’s doing to your hair) like a microfiber towel to wrap your hair in after hair washing without rubbing or tugging on the hair. Instead of rubbing, squeeze the towel with your hair in it to absorb excess water and then wrap your hair to absorb any remaining water.

4. Get Rid of Split Ends

One of the best ways to stop hair breakage is by targeting split ends and getting rid of them as soon as possible.

The ways best ways to target split ends is by using deep conditioners and leave in treatments on the ends of your hair and by using split end sealers.

But here’s the real deal with split ends: once you have them, the only real way to completely get rid of them is by cutting them off. Hair products like sealers, conditioners, and leave in treatments seal the outer layer of your hair strands to appear smoother and put off breakage, but the only way to fully repair split ends is to chop them off and start fresh.

5. Shampoo Correctly

One of the reasons your hair might be breaking is because it’s very dry from over-shampooing or shampooring incorrectly.

When you wash your hair, concentrate the shampoo on your roots, and never on the ends of your hair. This way, your scalp gets thoroughly cleaned and residual shampoo flows down to the ends of your so your ends aren’t dry and brittle.

Long story short: never shampoo the ends of your hair – only on your scalp and roots.

6. Moisture Rich Shampoos

Not only is how you shampoo your hair very important, but so is the shampoo for you’re using. If you want to know how to stop hair breakage, make sure you’re using a shampoo that is hydrating, moisture rich, and sulfate-free.

Here are two you should check out for hair loss and breakage:

7. Silk Pillowcases

I love silk pillowcases and they’re great for so many things, including breakage prone hair.

Sleeping with a silk pillowcase helps prevent breakage because of the smoother fibers in the fabric which don’t tug on your hair and create friction – friction that often leads to breakage.

Silk pillowcases are a lot gentler on your hair and a must for any hair care routine!

8. Avoid Alcohol in Your Hair Products

Alcohol can be extremely drying to your hair and this can make your hair weak and very damaged.

That’s why if you want to know how to stop hair breakage you need to start using hair products that don’t have alcohol in them, like these fan favorites:

9. Protein Treatments

If hair breaking and loss is common for you, then trying a protein treatment might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Protein treatments help to bring in moisture, strength, elasticity, and protect hair from heat damage. The shaft of your hair often loses moisture because it’s farther away from the root and this can cause keratinized protein in your hair to break, leading to dry hair and lots of split ends and breakage.

You can get chemical protein treatments at salons but I love using protein rich keratin hair products in my hair care routine to make sure my hair stays hydrated and smooth.

Make sure not to overdo it on the protein, though, because this can cause damage from being over-processed.

FAQs

When Should I Cut Off My Breakage?

A lot of people might not want to hear this, but you should be getting regular hair trims to make sure your ends are healthy, allowing for faster and better hair growth.

Try to trim your hair every 8 weeks, but if you have very damaged, dry hair with lots of split ends, then it’s best to cut them off as soon as possible to allow your hair a fresh start so it can grow healthier.

Plus, getting regular hair trims actually lets your hair grow faster because all the unhealthy, damaged ends are gone so the follicles promote healthy hair growth.

Will My Hair Breakage Grow Back?

Of course! Even if you don’t get regular trims – which is highly recommended for all hair but especially hair with lots of breakage – as long as you follow the tips mentioned above, your hair will get healthier and grow back.

I hope these tips helped you answer how to stop hair breakage, shedding, and loss fast and at home!
