What are strawberry legs?
Strawberry legs refers to the appearance of dark spots or dots on the leg from clogged pores and ingrown hairs.
Do strawberry legs go away?
Yes! It is very easy to treat strawberry legs if you use the right products and techniques. Keep reading for the 10 most effective tips I used to get rid of my own strawberry legs.
Are strawberry legs normal?
Yes, strawberry legs are very normal and just means your pores are clogged. They are harmless and can be easily treated with minor changes to your skincare and shower routine.
What are strawberry legs caused by?
The most common cause of strawberry legs is clogged pores that lead to ingrown hairs. When you shave your legs, the pores open and can become trapped with bacteria, sebum, and dead skin that gives the appearance of bumpy and inflamed dots on the legs, also known as strawberry legs.
How long does it take to cure strawberry legs?
Depending on the products and techniques you use, you can notice a difference in the appearance of strawberry legs in just a few days.
Some tips mentioned in this list – like exfoliating and moisturizing – can make a noticeable difference in just a week, but other tips – like using products that target hyperpigmentation and dark spots – can take several weeks to a month to see a difference.
If you consistently use all the tips in this article, you will see a big difference in about a week.
How to Get Rid of Strawberry Legs FAST
1. Exfoliate!
Exfoliating your legs is so important if you want to reduce the appearance of strawberry legs.
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells on your leg and makes space for new hairs to break through the skin’s surface more easily, which will reduce ingrown hairs and help get rid of strawberry legs.
Best Exfoliators for Strawberry Legs
For my legs, I like to use an exfoliator that is quite grainy so it really moves all of the dead skin. Some of the best I’ve tried have coffee ground or sugar in them.
Here are some of my all-time favorite exfoliators. After using these for about 2 weeks, I noticed such a big difference in the appearance of my strawberry legs and how many less ingrown hairs I was getting:
- Aesop Redemption Body Scrub (my holy grail!)
- Himalayan Salt Scrub
- Bare Botanics Coconut Vanilla Body Scrub

2. Use Products with Salicylic Acid
Salicylic acid has exfoliating properties that are also great for acne and reducing the appearance of strawberry legs.
Think of salicylic acid as a chemical exfoliant that has removes and reduces excess sebum production and oil, which is great for unclogging the pores and reducing ingrown hairs and strawberry legs.
Salicylic acid is also great for inflammation, which is super common when you have strawberry legs.
Salicylic Acid for Strawberry Legs
If you want effective products that target strawberry legs, then you need to try products with salicylic acid in them, like these:
- Murad Clarifying and Exfoliating Body Wash Gel
- CeraVe Body Wash with Salicylic Acid
- Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

3. Use Products with Glycolic Acid
Salicylic acid is a great ingredient for curing strawberry legs, but so is glycolic acid.
Glycolic acid is another great ingredient for unclogging pores, and allowing the skin to be prepared for new hair to grow in without worrying about ingrown hairs.
This is super important because without ingrown hairs, your legs won’t get stubborn little back dots, aka strawberry legs.
Glycolic Acid for Strawberry Legs
A lot of glycolic acid products are meant for the face, but they work just as well on the body – I actually feel like the skincare for face is more potent than body skincare products.
Here are two of the best glycolic acid products on the market that you need to try:
- Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Exfoliant with Glycolic Acid
- Glycolic Acid Liquid Resurfacing Solution

4. Dry Brush
Dry brushing serves the same purpose as exfoliating for strawberry legs: it gets rid of dead skin cells and leaves your pores and hair follicles open and ready for new hairs to come in so that you don’t get ingrown hairs and strawberry legs.
How to Dry Brush
Dry brushing your skin is very simple and effective, IF done correctly.
All you need to do is brush your skin in circular motions for a couple of minutes (as long as it takes to go over the desired skin at least three times in circular motions – it takes me about 3 minutes total for both of my legs) and then soak your skin in warm water for 5 minutes before you shave your legs.
When you’re dry brushing, make sure to use pressure – it’s normal for the skin to get a little red in the process.
Best Dry Brushes for Strawberry Legs
Any dry brush will do, but I’ve been using this set from Amazon and loved it!
5. Target Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots
Sometimes, even when you treat strawberry legs, your legs can have residual hyperpigmentation and dark spots from the ingrown hairs.
That’s why if you want to completely get rid of strawberry legs, then you should incorporate products meant for hyperpigmentation in your skincare routine.
Important tip: the products you use to target hyperpigmentation should not be applied in the shower – after your shower, put the products all over your legs and then seal it with moisturizer.
With hyperpigmentation products, you need to use them for at least 3 weeks to see a noticeable difference, so if you use it a few times and don’t immediately see a difference, don’t lose hope!

This article has 33 products that are amazing for hyperpigmentation and dark spots!
Here are some of them that I love (some are meant for the face but I used them on my body and loved them!):
6. ALWAYS Moisturize
This is a simple trick that makes all the difference!
Moisturizing your skin is a great way to minimize the appearance of strawberry legs because it hydrates and plumps the skin.
I used to never moisturize after showers, but I’ve gotten into the habit of lathering myself in body butters and moisturizers after my shower, and it made such an immediate difference to my strawberry legs.
After moisturizing regularly, my legs looked a lot brighter and it looked like the red dots from ingrown hairs almost completely faded.
Best Moisturizers for Strawberry Legs
To see a big difference in the appearance of strawberry legs, use a body butter, body oil, or a very thick and creamy moisturizer – these will hydrate and plump the skin the best and reduce the look of strawberry legs the most.
Here are some of the best body moisturizers for strawberry legs:
- Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter
- CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
- MoroccanOil Dry Body Oil
- MoroccanOil Body Butter

7. Use a Good Razor
If you shave your legs, it’s worth investing in good quality razors that won’t cause razor burn and bumps due to irritation – this is one of the biggest reasons that you get strawberry legs.
If you use disposable razors, don’t reuse them several times, throw each razor out after one use.
Best Razors for Strawberry Legs
I actually love using men’s razors for my legs because I find them a lot more sturdy and the razor sharper, but there’s some great women’s razors you should get out, too:

8. Shave with Good Quality Shaving Lotions
Have you ever tried shaving your legs when they’re dry and the razor burns your skin, leaves it red and inflamed, and you end up with red bumps all over your legs?
Yup, that’s because if you’re wondering how to get rid of strawberry legs fast, you need to make sure you’re using good quality shaving creams and lotions.
When deciding on what shaving cream to get, you want to look for something that has soothing and hydrating ingredients, and a texture that will allow your razor to glide on the skin and leave it baby soft. The shaving cream should get rid of any friction between the razor and your leg.
Pro Tip: when I run out of shaving lotion, I love to use conditioner! It’s super hydrating and glides on the skin like butter.

Here’s a few shaving cream options that never disappoint!

9. Stop Shaving – Try Waxing or Laser
If you shave your legs, you’re a lot more likely to have strawberry legs and ingrown hairs because you’re only cutting the hair, not actually getting rid of it from the root or follicle.
Try waxing or getting laser hair removal – both methods of hair removal remove the hair from the root and makes strawberry legs and ingrown hairs a lot less likely to happen.
Important tip: I’ve heard a lot of people recommending epilators to get rid of strawberry legs, and I do NOT recommend this because epilators can leave the skin irritated, inflamed, and sensitive for a lot longer than waxing or laser hair removal can and this can make your strawberry legs worse instead of better. I had tried epilating my legs but stopped because of how much worse my strawberry legs got – it took 3 weeks to get all the bumps and inflammation to go away.
10. Shave with the Grain
This is a super easy tip that makes such a big difference.
If you shave your legs, make sure to shave in the direction that the hair is growing to avoid razor burns, irritation, and inflammation.
This helps the skin on your legs stay smooth or clean, reducing the appearance of strawberry legs.
