Back Acne Causes
Before we can get into how to get rid of back acne, let’s address what causes back acne in females?
Acne is built up oil or sebum that the body produces and dead skin cells that leads to pimples, inflamed, and red skin.
The most common causes of back acne are:
- Genetics
- Hormones: that’s why you tend to break out more during your menstrual cycle!
- Sweat
- Stress
- Your Diet
Let’s get into what you can do to get rid of back acne overnight!
Best Products for Back Acne
If you want to know how to get rid of back acne fast (as quickly as one week!), then you need to be using the right back acne treatments, which include the best products for back acne.
Some of the best ingredients to fight back acne are:
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Retinoids
- Salicylic acid
- Glycolic acid
- Tea tree oil
- Aloe vera
I have suffered from severe back acne for the last 10 years, and here are the ride or die products if you want to get rid of back acne overnight!
Paula’s Choice Retinol Skin-Smoothing Body Treatment
This retinol body treatment is meant to smooth the skin and get rid of any wrinkles, but it also really helps with back and should acne!
If you want to get rid of back acne naturally and at home, this is a no-brainer and great for sensitive skin.
Versed Acne-Control Body Mist
Want to know how to get rid of back acne fast? Then this body mist is not a want but a NEED.
Packed with salicylic acid, tea tree oil, and witch hazel, it fights back acne and is great if you’re on the go.
Humane Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Wash
This is a fan favorite body acne wash if you have sensitive skin and harsh cystic acne.
It’s effective but gentle, and you’ll start seeing results within a week of using it.
The only downside is that the bottle pump is an absolute pain to use, but worth the trouble!
Organic Aloe Vera Gel
I love putting aloe vera gel on any active acne on my back to sooth it, reduce inflammation and redness, and start the healing process so my back doesn’t scar.
This aloe vera gel is one of my favorites!
PanOxyl Maximum Strength Acne Foaming Wash
This maximum strength 10% benzoyl peroxide acne wash is a fool-proof back acne treatment that people swear by!
Because this foaming wash is highly concentrated, it’s great for painful, cystic acne but not so great if you have very sensitive skin – the acne wash above is better for you!
Japanese Medicated Back Acne Body Soap
This Japanese soap is specially formulated to treat back acne and is commonly prescribed by dermatologists for people with severe back acne.
Use this in the shower like you would your regular soap, let it sit for a minute or two, and rinse.
Use it consistently and you’ll see a noticeable difference in your back acne in a week!
How to Get Rid of Back Acne Fast (Proven Tips!)
Use a Chemical Exfoliant (Not a Physical One!)
I love using physical exfoliators like scrubs and loofahs on my body, EXCEPT for on my back.
Using a physical exfoliator on your back, especially if you have back acne, is a huge mistake because it can lead to irritation, transfer of bacteria, and clogged pores, all which will make your back acne worse.
However, exfoliation is very important to make sure you’re removing all the dead skin and allowing your skin and pores to breathe and heal your acne.
That’s why I only use chemical exfoliants for my back acne, specifically these Glycolic acid pads.
Chemical exfoliants are AHA and BHAs. The most popular AHAs are glycolic and lactic acids; and the most popular BHA is salicylic acid.
I love using these resurfacing pads after a shower: just gently scrub your back with them two times a week for a clear back in no time.
Choose a Bacne Free Sunscreen
SPF for your face and body is a skincare MUST, but did you know that the sunscreen you’re using on your back might actually be making your back acne worse?
If your sunscreen has oil in it, it will most likely clog the pores on your back and lead to worse back acne that might scar.
That’s why choosing an oil-free sunscreen is so important if you want to know how to get rid of back acne overnight.
My favorite sunscreen for my face and body is this EltaMD broad spectrum that’s oil free and perfect for acne-prone and sensitive skin.
This is one of the best sunscreens for acne!
Oil is a No-No
Moisturizing your body after showering is important for soft and supple skin all day long, but make sure to be using an oil-free moisturizer for your back.
Oil based products, like sunscreen and moisturizer, can clog your pores and make back acne worse.
These are two of my favorite moisturizers to put specifically on my back (I dip two fingers into the Farmacy jar or one pinky length size of product from the La Roche Posay tube for all of my back):
- Farmacy Oil Free Gel Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid
- La Roche Posay Double Repair Moisturizer with Niacinamide
Your Hair Conditioner Might be Causing Back Acne
This is a simple tip to avoid getting back acne: DON’T let hair conditioner get on you back. The chemicals in hair conditioner may irritate your back, clog pores, and aggravate bacne.
Instead, I like to use a extra big claw clip to keep my hair (while it has conditioner in it) up so that it doesn’t trickle down onto my back.
Keep Hair Off Your Back
When you’re wearing clothes that expose your back, try to keep your hair up so that the hair doesn’t touch your back.
The oil from your hair can transfer onto your back and clog your pores, making back acne worse.
Don’t Touch It!
Want to know how to get rid of back acne in a week? One of the simplest and most effective back acne treatment tips is: DON’T TOUCH YOUR BACK.
The more you touch your back, or pick the acne on the back, the worse it will get because it lead to open wounds that can lead to infection, severe scarring, and even worse back acne.
Plus, the oils from your fingers can clog your pores.
It is a lot easier to scar your body than your face, so touching your back acne will significantly increase your chances of permanent scarring on the back.
If you want to get rid of back acne naturally, one of the best things you can do it to just leave it alone and not touch it.
Wash Sheets & Towels Weekly
A big reason you might have back acne is because you aren’t taking hygiene seriously.
Washing your sheets and towels AT LEAST weekly is essential.
Dirty sheets and towels can transfer dirt to your back and lead to bacne, clogged pores, and sensitive skin.
Shower After Every Workout
After you workout, the sweat on your back can linger on the skin and clog your pores.
That, plus the friction from your tight workout gear, is a recipe for back acne.
Try to immediately shower after your workout so that your skin doesn’t trap bacteria and dirt for a clear back ASAP.
Wipes are Always a Good Option
If you’re on the go and aren’t able to shower right after your workout, keeping wet wipes on you is a great idea.
These ones by CeraVe are my favorite because they don’t make my skin feel sticky and like they have residue left on my skin.
Are You Eating the Right Foods?

Here are foods you should be eating for a clear back:
